This version of The Empress was inspired by Venice’s Carnevale, with its elaborate costumes, theatrical presentation, and sense of excess and beauty. I wanted to lean into that richness and create something that felt ornate, celebratory, and larger than life, while still keeping the figure grounded in the themes of abundance, creativity, and feminine power that are associated with The Empress.
 
The piece gave me a chance to explore layers of decoration, texture, and mixed media in a way that suited both the carnival theme and the card itself. I was especially interested in that balance between spectacle and warmth, creating something that felt extravagant without losing the nurturing, generative energy at the heart of The Empress.
